The fact that cult Californian genre-blending rockers Cake are still dressing their live sets today with bangers from their first album proves just how powerful the mid-90s Cake era was. At the time of recording this live set in 1995, they were on the cusp of releasing their most successful album Fashion Nugget, so most of the songs are culled from that incredible album. 'Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps' is a soulful cut that belatedly sounds like the love child of Calexico, Primus and The Cat Empire. 'The Distance' is much more driving - a real rabble-rouser - and one of the best rock songs of the 90s. Meanwhile, the absurd 'I Bombed Korea' has a jangly Moldy Peaches feel along with some of the record's funkiest basslines. A true gem for anyone interested in plumbing the depths of the very best alternative American rock from the 90s.
